How to ride BART and use its Bay Area system map
Based on official agency instructions · Sources checked 2026-10-24 · Independent guide
Use the BART system map to identify your stations and the destination shown for the train you need. Check the map for your time of travel: the official map distinguishes the daytime network from late-evening service. The BART trip planner includes planned delays and can help confirm whether a transfer is needed.
BART accepts Clipper and contactless bank cards or mobile wallets through Tap and Ride. Tap at the fare gate when entering and again at your destination, using the same card or device both times. Each Tap and Ride passenger needs a separate card or device. Eligibility-based discount riders should check BART's Clipper instructions rather than assume a bank-card tap will apply their discount.
BART has accessible elevators, wider fare gates and level train boarding, although the platform gap still requires care. Check elevator status shortly before your trip because an outage can change your accessible route. If payment or station access is unclear, ask the Station Agent before proceeding through the gate.
Your boarding checklist
- Find your line and any transfer on the map appropriate to the time of travel.
- Check the official trip planner, service information and elevator status when needed.
- Choose one payment card or device, tap in, and confirm the destination on the platform display.
- Keep that same payment method available for inspection and tap out at the destination.
