How to ride CTA buses and L trains in Chicago
Based on official agency instructions · Sources checked 2026-10-24 · Independent guide
CTA's L lines are identified by color, but the train's destination tells you its direction. Use the system map to locate the line and transfer you need, follow station boarding signs, and compare the arriving train's destination with your planned trip. A timetable and the live Train Tracker answer different questions: the first shows planned service, while the second estimates arrivals.
CTA accepts a Ventra Card or Ticket and contactless bank cards or mobile wallets. Pay at the train station gate or when boarding a bus. If you use a contactless payment method, keep using the same card or device for transfer recognition. Cash can buy fare media at station vending machines; cash fares on buses require exact change and do not provide transfers.
On the bus, check both the route number and destination because some trips turn back before the route's far end. Request your stop with the cord or button and normally leave through the rear door. For a step-free train trip, check the accessible station list and current elevator alerts before travel.
Your boarding checklist
- Find your line or bus number and the destination for the correct direction.
- Check route alerts and, when needed, elevator status; use CTA trackers for arrivals.
- Have your chosen payment method ready and pay at the gate or on boarding.
- Confirm the destination sign, let others exit, and keep doors and aisles clear.
