How to ride LA Metro buses and trains

Based on official agency instructions · Sources checked 2026-10-24 · Independent guide

LA Metro's map combines rail lines and busways, so check which kind of vehicle your trip uses. The G and J lines are bus rapid transit services rather than trains. For an ordinary bus route, match its number and destination on the windshield sign with your schedule; the same street stop can serve several routes.

Metro's current official instructions allow payment with a physical or digital TAP card or contactless credit or debit card. Bus riders can also pay cash. Board the bus through the front door and pay as you enter. For rail, tap the station validator or turnstile before entering the paid platform area, and follow tap-to-exit instructions at stations where they apply.

Metro's accessibility guide explains ramps, elevators and assistance with bus boarding and wheelchair securement. Check current alerts for elevator outages as well as detours and service changes. On a bus, signal before your stop with the button or yellow cord; the agency advises about one block before arrival. Normally exit through the rear door.

Your boarding checklist

  1. Use the official line maps to identify your rail line, busway or bus route and destination.
  2. Check alerts and current arrival information before heading to the stop or station.
  3. Have payment ready: pay when boarding a bus or tap before entering the rail paid area.
  4. Confirm the destination, listen for stops, and follow posted exit and accessibility instructions.
