How to ride SEPTA Metro, buses and Regional Rail

Based on official agency instructions · Sources checked 2026-10-24 · Independent guide

Decide whether your trip uses SEPTA Metro and buses or Regional Rail before choosing a map and fare. SEPTA publishes separate Regional Rail, Metro and frequent-bus maps, along with City, North and West regional transit maps. Use the individual line schedule and direction for your actual trip rather than assuming every service shown on a regional map operates the same way.

SEPTA accepts Key cards and contactless payment, but Regional Rail has an important extra step: tap on at the origin station and tap off at the destination to close the trip. Use the same payment method. Conductors check payment onboard. A trip without an exit tap can be charged the maximum fare, so keep your card or device handy when leaving the train.

Before travelling, check SEPTA alerts and, for a step-free trip, the accessible station information and elevator status. All buses are accessible, but station access varies. SEPTA's Accessible Travel Center at Suburban Station provides training by appointment for riders who want help learning the system; see the agency's accessibility page for current arrangements.

Your boarding checklist

  1. Pick the appropriate Metro/bus or Regional Rail map, then confirm the line, direction and departure for your date.
  2. Check service alerts and the accessibility of your boarding, transfer and destination stations.
  3. Have your Key card or contactless method ready. On Regional Rail, tap at the station before boarding and present payment when checked.
  4. Listen for your destination and tap off after Regional Rail travel to close the trip.
